MACA – Simulated Work

I reached out to the year 2 group members the first time when the list was announced. We shared our work and art styles with each other and the director introduced us to their animation projects and stories. The director went through our work and assigned us the appropriate content to work on. The content I needed to complete in the first week was the passerby character design and split color draft.

The first thing I completed was the design of the passerby character. The clothes of the passerby are basically the same as the main character’s, so I focused on the differences in facial features and hairstyle in the design. Because it is a passerby, it has to look more normal than the main character’s features so as not to distract the main character’s camera.

Passerby Character Design

I think timely communication is very necessary in the work. At the beginning when I drew the color drafts, I was afraid of disturbing the group by asking questions many times, so I drew the wrong length of the protagonist’s hair in one of the color drafts. Untimely communication reduced my work efficiency.

I was very careful with the color drawing and it was the most difficult part in my opinion. Since it was different from my personal style and needed to fit the style of the project, I asked the member in charge of the main style to work with me. This greatly increased my efficiency in completing the work!

The second week the director assigned the task of color draft for the main character who has a richer picture. I finished the line draft in time for the director to check it out and make sure it was okay before I started coloring.

In my work, I learned more deeply about the production process of professional animation. Among them, the preliminary research and preparation is very important. I learned to use a shared table to arrange all storyboards, and note details such as dialogue, color, and so on. Each time a change or enrichment is made, it is filled in the table. This method enhances teamwork.

What I think I did well in this simulation was to change my style to match the style needed for the project. Taking the initiative to ask and check with the director after realizing the importance of communication in a timely manner.
